1970s design for a "Flag of Wessex".
William Crampton wrote a pamphlet for the Flag Institute back in 1973 or 1974 which advocated flags for the English regions (there was talk of regional councils being set up as part of the local government reorganisation then occurring), but his suggestion for Wessex was a gold wyvern on red. It was, of course, not official and as far as I know, never raised much interest locally. There was also a small Wessex Regionalist Party that was active about 15-20 years ago, but they never made much headway. This may possibly have been their flag - I didn't live in the area at the time, so I can't say. Roy Stilling, 17 February 1997, crwflags.com

The 11th-century Byzantine vandon banner, a square shape with pointed streamers probably beared by cavalry. The banner depicting a Greek cross and golden discs, that preceded the later tetragrammatic cross. According to the historian A. Babuin, the flags with crosses quartered with golden discs were from the 10th century, and a depiction of a flag almost identical to the Palaiologan symbolism from the early 13th century.

Abbasid banner.svg
Flag which can be used to represent the Abbasid Caliphate. Note that the concept of rectangular national flags did not exist during Abbasid times, but black was the dynastic color of the Abbasids (just as green was the dynastic color of the Fatimids, etc.), and the "black banner" of the Abbasids is famous in Islamic history.
