Portrait of Alice Manfield (Guide Alice) (1878-1960), mountain guide, naturalist, chalet owner, photographer, and early feminist figure based at Mt Buffalo, Victoria, Australia.

Man wearing cap & suit on motorised pushbike, Mt Buffalo Vic, Alice Manfield.jpg
Man wearing a peaked cap and suit riding a motorised bicycle at Mt Buffalo, Victoria, Australia.
The bike is labelled Minerva, a Belgian company that produced "Minerva Motocyclettes" between 1900 and 1909, after which they went on to specialise in luxury cars. This model probably dates from around 1903–04. A small internal combustion engine can be seen near the bottom bracket. The engine drives a belt connected to a large gear ring around the outside of the far side of the rear wheel.
Converted to digital from negative: glass; 8.5 cm x 9 cm.
Pulpit Rock, Mt Buffalo, by Alice Manfield, c1890-1930.jpg
Image of Pulpit Rock, Mt Buffalo, Victoria, Australia, with an apparently female figure lying on the rock, stretched out looking down the sheer cliff-face of The Gorge (it is thought that figure is Alice herself, having set up the camera beforehand, and then posing for the photo).
