Turnaj se odehrál v rámci XVI. olympijských her ve dnech 22. listopadu – 1. prosince 1956 v Melbourne.

Turnaje se zúčastnilo 15 mužstev, rozdělených do tří čtyřčlenných a jedné tříčlenné skupiny. První dvě postoupila do čtvrtfinále, které hrálo ve dvou skupinách z nichž nejlepší dva celky postoupily do bojů o medaile. Mužstva, která skončila v základních skupinách na třetím a čtvrtém místě hrála o 9.–15. místo. Olympijským vítězem se stal počtvrté celek USA.
