XX. Mistrovství světa jezdců a 12. ročník poháru konstruktérů zahájila 1. března Grand Prix JAR a po 11 závodech 19. října při Grand Prix Mexika byl znám nový mistr světa. Mistrem světa pro rok 1969 se stal Jackie Stewart a v Poháru konstruktérů zvítězil Matra.
