Ve Formuli 1 v roce 1978 se uskutečnilo celkem 17 závodů Grand Prix, z toho 16 se započítávalo do Mistrovství světa, závod BRDC International Trophy v Silverstone dne 19. března 1978 se do MS nepočítal. Sezóně dominovaly vozy Lotus-Ford Cosworth 79 konstruktéra Colina Chapmana, které pilotovali Mario Andretti a Ronnie Peterson. Zatímco Andretti získal titul mistra světa, Peterson na následky hromadné nehody těsně po startu Velké ceny v Monze následujícího dne 11. září 1978 zemřel v nemocnici v Miláně.
