John Jabez Edwin Paisley Mayall (17. září 1813 Oldham, Lancashire – 6. března 1901) byl anglický portrétní fotograf, který v roce 1860 pořídil první fotografii carte de visite královny Viktorie.[2]
Podle tvrzení jednoho historika fotografie byla prvním „nejbližším pokusem o výtvarného umění“ komponovaná fotografie Johna Mayalla, který v roce 1851 vystavil svou daguerrotypii představující otčenáš.[3]
Život a dílo
Mayall využíval techniky ručně kolorovaného albuminového tisku a vyráběl takzvané carte de visite - pohlednice, které lidé s oblibou sbírali. V březnu 1861 byl pověřen, aby pořídil dvojportrét královského páru. Albert však několik měsíců poté zemřel (v prosinci 1861) a tato událost vyvolala poptávku veřejnosti po portrétech královské rodiny na fotografických vizitkách. Nákupem těchto snímků veřejnost demonstrovala své sympatie a podílela se na podobě veřejného smutku.
V té době bylo módní sběratelství fotografií a vkládat je do alb. Královna Viktorie sdílela se svým manželem nadšení pro fotografování a vlastnili více než 100 alb, ve kterých sbírali portréty z každé zahraniční cesty.

Object Type - A miniature photographic portrait such as this example, is called a 'carte de visite' (the French for 'visiting card'). This was a photographic format, originating from the visiting card, which was introduced in France in 1854. These 'cartes, were mass produced, and those like Mayall's pictures of the royal couple were ordered by the hundreds of thousands.
People - In March, 1861, John J.E. Mayall was entrusted with the important royal commission of photographing Queen Victoria and Albert, the Prince Consort. Albert's death, only nine months after this photograph was taken, created an unprecedented public demand for 'carte de visite' portraits of the royal family. By purchasing such images the public demonstrated its sympathy and shared in a form of public mourning.
Collecting - It was fashionable to collect 'cartes de visite' and compile them in albums. Queen Victoria shared her husband's enthusiasm for photography and had over 100 albums in which she collected portraits from every foreign court.
