 Letecký výsostný znak USAF

Letectvo Spojených států amerických (anglicky United States Air Force; USAF) je součástí Ozbrojených sil Spojených států a jednou z osmi amerických uniformovaných složek. Aktivně v něm slouží 352 000 mužů i žen a má k dispozici přes 9000 letadel.

Přesto však USAF počítá s nákupem a nasazením letounů Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II, a to i navzdory zvyšování ceny programu a pomalému procesu nasazování tohoto stroje. Nedávno dokončená studie o požadované schopnosti mobility (MCRS) vyústila do nového operačního plánu pro nasazení strojů C-17 v počtu 223 kusů a C-5 v počtu 89 kusů, včetně 52 plně modernizovaných strojů C-5M.

V rámci tohoto programu budou americké námořnictvo a americká armáda vytvářet společné základny (joint bases).

Vojenská letiště Air Force na americkém výsostném území mají označení „Air Force Base“ (AFB), mimo něj „Air Base“ (AB), menší pak „Air Station“ (AS). Letiště využívaná jinými ozbrojenými silami pak mají odlišná označení.

With its tremendous payload capability, the large C-5 Galaxy, an outsized-cargo transport, provides the Air Mobility Command intertheater airlift in support of United States national defence. The C-5 is one of the largest aircraft in the world. It can carry outsized cargo intercontinental ranges and can take off or land in relatively short distances. Ground crews can load and off load the C-5 simultaneously at the front and rear cargo openings since the nose and aft doors open the full width and height of the cargo compartment. It can also "kneel down" to facilitate loading directly from truck bed levels.

Created to illustrate the Wikipedia RQ-170 Sentinel article. Human-scale was determined from "Aviation Week" blog article reporting that the wingspan is estimated to be 65-feet. The E-3 Sentry is an airborne warning and control system aircraft that provides all-weather surveillance, command, control and communications needed by commanders of U.S. and NATO air defense forces. As proven in Desert Storm, it is the premier air battle command and control aircraft in the world today. The E-3 Sentry is a modified Boeing 707/320 commercial airframe with a rotating radar dome. The dome is 30 feet in diameter, six feet thick, and is held 11 feet above the fuselage by two struts. It contains a radar subsystem that permits surveillance fromthe Earth's surface up into the stratosphere, over land or water. The radar has a range of more than 200 miles for low-flying targets and farther for aerospace vehicles flying at medium to high altitudes. The radar combined with an identification friend or foe subsystem can look down to detect, identify and track enemy and friendly low-flying aircraft by eliminating ground clutter returns that confuse other radar systems.
