Owen Kay Garriott (22. listopadu 1930 Enid, Oklahoma, USA[1] – 15. dubna 2019, Huntsville, Alabama[2]) byl americký vědec, astronaut ze stanice Skylab, který se také zúčastnil mise STS-9.
Život
Mládí a výcvik
V roce 1953 zakončil studium na elektrotechnické fakultě University of Oklahoma. Pak stejný obor studoval i na Stanfordově univerzitě. Doktorát z elektrotechniky obhájil roku 1960. Ve funkci vědeckého pracovníka byl vybrán roku 1965 do čtvrté skupiny amerických kosmonautů. Byl ženatý a měl čtyři děti.
Let do vesmíru
Na palubě kosmické lodi Skylab 3 odstartoval ke svému dvouměsíčnímu pobytu v orbitální stanici Skylab 1 společně s kosmonauty Beanem a Lousmou. Owen se zabýval především vědeckými, biologickými výzkumy a pozorováním Slunce. Společně se svými druhy zvládl výstupy mimo stanici (EVA) a pak i přistání s kabinou na padácích na hladině Tichého oceánu.[3].
O deset let později se dostal do vesmíru podruhé s expedicí STS-9 (dle COSPARu 1973-050.A). Společně s ním v raketoplánu Columbia bylo pět dalších kosmonautů, Američané John Young, Brewster Shaw, Robert Parker, Byron Lichtenberg a Němec Ulf Merbold. Start byl z Kennedyho vesmírného střediska na Floridě. Během letu zvládli 70 vědeckých experimentů a s menšími problémy i přistání na základně Edwards.
Během dvou svých letů strávil ve vesmíru 69 dní.
Syn v kosmu
V říjnu 2008 se vydal jeho syn Richard, americký podnikatel, do vesmíru jako vesmírný turista na palubě lodi Sojuz TMA-13.[4]

Scientist-astronaut Owen K. Garriott, Skylab 3 science pilot, is seen performing an extravehicular activity at the Apollo Telescope Mount (ATM) of the Skylab space station cluster in Earth orbit, photographed with a hand-held 70mm Hasselblad camera. Garriott had just deployed the Skylab Particle Collection S149 Experiment. The experiment is mounted on one of the ATM solar panels. The purpose of the S149 experiment was to collect material from interplanetary dust particles on prepared surfaces suitable for studying their impact phenomena. Earlier during the EVA Garriott assisted astronaut Jack R. Lousma, Skylab 3 pilot, in deploying the twin pole solar shield.
This is the emblem for the second manned Skylab mission. It will be a mission of up to 56 days. The patch symbolizes the main objectives of the flight. The central figure, adapted from Leonardo da Vinci's Vitruvian Man, illustrates the proportions of the human form and suggests the many studies of man himself to be conducted in the zero-gravity environment of space. This drawing is superimposed on two hemispheres representing the two additional main areas of research - studies of the Sun and the development of techniques for survey of the Earth's resources. The left hemisphere show the Sun as it will be seen in the red light radiated by hydrogen atoms in the solar atmosphere. The right hemisphere is intended to suggest the studies of Earth resources to be conducted on Skylab. Although the patch denotes this mission as Skylab II, it is actually consided to be the Skylab III mission. Image ID: S72-51123

This is the official insignia for STS-9, the major payload of which is Spacelab 1, depicted in the cargo bay of the Columbia. The nine stars and the path of the orbiter tell the flight's numerical designation in the Space Transportation System's mission sequence. Astronaut John N. Young is crew commander, Brewster N. Shaw, Jr., pilot. NASA Astronauts Owen K. Garriott and Robert A. Parker are mission specialists. Byron K. Lichtenberg of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Ulf Merbold of the Republic of West Germany are the Spacelab 1 payload specialists. Launch has been set for late 1983.
Merbold is a physicist representing the European Space Agency (ESA).
