Muži absolvovali 50 metrů volným způsobem v Beijing National Aquatics Center. Nejprve 14. srpna ve 13 rozplavbách, když olympijský rekord ruského plavce Alexandra Popova překonal v 11. rozplavbě Brazilec César Cielo posléze ho překonal v následující rozplavbě Francouz Amaury Leveaux. 15. srpna se uskutečnily dvě semifinálové rozplavby a hned v té první znovu Brazilec César Cielo posunul hodnotu olympijského rekordu na 21.34. Ve finálovém kole s brazilský sportovec snažil překonat hodnotu světového rekordu, ale zaostal za ním o dvě setiny sekundy, přesto znovu posunul hranici rekordu olympijského na 21.30.
