German Pfalz D.III. (14023740066).jpg
Autor: Bernard Spragg. NZ from Christchurch, New Zealand, Licence: CC0

The Pfalz D.III was a fighter aircraft used by the Luftstreitkräfte (Imperial German Air Service) during the First World War. Built in April 1917, using a plywood monocoque fuselage, two layers of thin plywood strips were placed over a mold to form one half of a fuselage shell. The fuselage halves were then glued together, covered with a layer of fabric, and doped. This method gave the fuselage great strength, light weight, and smooth contours compared to conventional construction techniques.

The D.III slipped in turns, leading to crashes when unwary pilots turned at very low altitudes, also stalling sharply and spinning readily, which some pilots took advantage of to descend quickly or evade enemy aircraft. The Pfalz’s primary advantage was it could safely dive at high speeds due to its twin-spar lower wing and was well-suited to diving attacks on observation balloons.

Pfalz built approximately 260 D.III aircraft with the final batch completed in May 1918, Many serviceable aircraft were sent to advanced training schools, but approximately 100 aircraft remained in frontline use at the time of the Armistice.

American soldier guarding a Heinkel He 162 Volksjäger. It is not clear where the picture was taken. The Heinkel He 162 was a German single engined, jet powered fighter aircraft fielded by the Luftwaffe in WWII. Designed and built quickly, and made primarily of wood it was nevertheless the fastest of the first generation of Axis and Allied jets. It was called Volksjäger,Salamander or Spatz ("Sparrow").
This He 162 "White 4" of fighter unit JG1 was captured by British troops at Leck in Northern Germany. 3 He 162 were subsequently brought to Kassel. Originally, it was planned to take these jets to the US for evaluation.

RAF Tornado GR4 MOD 45155233.jpg

A IX(B) Tornado GR4 training for deployment to Afghanistan.

Pictured here on 12 October 2012 is a Tornado GR4 aircraft as it undertakes a training sortie over the North West of England. The Tornado from IX(B) Squadron is preparing for deployed operations over Afghanistan in the near future.

The Tornado GR4 is a variable geometry, two-seat, day or night, all-weather attack aircraft capable of delivering a wide variety of weapons. Powered by two Rolls-Royce RB 199 Mk 103 turbofan engines, the GR4 is capable of low-level supersonic flight and can sustain a high subsonic cruise speed.

The GR4 typically carries up to a maximum of 5 Paveway IV smart weapons or 2 Stormshadow cruise missiles but can be configured with various weapons, targeting pods and reconnaissance pods simultaneously including the Dual Mode Seeker (DMS) Brimstone, ALARM Mk2 missile, Litening III and the Reconnaissance Airborne Pod TORnado (RAPTOR).

The Tornado GR4 is a world leader in the specialised field of all-weather, day and night tactical reconnaissance. The RAPTOR pod is one of the most advanced reconnaissance sensors in the world and greatly increases the effectiveness of the aircraft in the reconnaissance role. Its introduction into service gave the GR4 the ability to transmit real-time, Long Range Oblique Photography (LOROP) to commanders or to view this in cockpit during a mission. The stand-off range of the sensors also allows the aircraft to remain outside heavily defended areas, thus minimising the aircraft’s exposure to enemy air-defence systems. Additional capability in the Non-Traditional Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (NTISR) role is provided by the Litening III RD and the use of the ROVER data link for providing tactical operators with real time Full Motion Video (FMV) in the battle space.

The Tornado GR4 is now equipped with the Storm Shadow missile and 2 variants of the Brimstone missile, including the most advanced DMS variant.

NB-36H with B-50, 1955 - DF-SC-83-09332.jpeg
An air-to-air view of the Convair NB-36H Peacemaker experimental aircraft (s/n 51-5712) and a Boeing B-50 Superfortress chase plane during research and development taking place at the Convair plant at Forth Worth, Texas (USA). The NB-36H was originally a B-36H-20-CF damaged at Carswell Air Force Base, also at Forth Worth, by a tornado on 1 September 1952. This plane was called the Nuclear Test Aircraft (NTA) and was redesignated XB-36H, then NB-36H, and was modified to carry a three megawatt, air-cooled nuclear reactor in its bomb bay. The reactor, named the Aircraft Shield Test Reactor (ASTR), was operational but did not power the plane. The NTA completed 47 test flights and 215 hours of flight time (during 89 of which the reactor was operated) between July 1955 and March 1957 over New Mexico and Texas. This was the only known airborne reactor experiment by the USA with an operational nuclear reactor on board. The NB-36H was scrapped at Fort Worth in September 1958 when the Nuclear Aircraft Program was abandoned.

Ing. Kurt Tank, den unser Bild zeigt.

Popis

Interior photo of the B-29 Superfortress bomber. June 1944 Shown is the rear pressurized cabin, equipped with four bunks to give crew members a chance for rest on a long mission. This is an important factor in combating flight fatigue. The B-29 was first reported in action on June 5, 1944, in an attack on railway yards at Bangkok, Siam, and on June 15 the first raid was made in Japan from bases in China. Following that date, attacks on the Japanese mainland were steadily stepped up, mainly from bases in the Marianas and in Guam, with forces up to 450 and 500 Superfortresses. (U.S. Air Force photo)[1]

The F-16XL's unusual curved double delta wing platform is apparent in this photo. During the mid to late 1990s several research aircraft flew in dazzling paint finishes. A prime example was the F-15B ACTIVE, with its red, white, and blue markings. The F-16XL #1's finish in December 1997 was also eye catching. The wings, tail, and upper aft fuselage was black with yellow trim, while the forward fuselage was white. The F-16XL is testing a Digital Flight Control System (DFCS).

A right side view of an Israel Aircraft Industries F-21A Kfir (young lion) aircraft of the U.S. Navy fighter squadron VF-43. Twenty-five modified Kfir C1s were leased to the US Navy and the US Marine Corps from 1985 to 1989, to act as adversary aircraft in dissimilar air combat training (DACT). These aircraft, designated F-21A Kfir, had narrow-span canard foreplanes and a single small rectangular strake on either side of the nose which considerably improved the aircraft's manoeuvrability, and handling at low speeds.

The 12 F-21 aircraft leased to the US Navy, painted in a three-tone blue-gray "ghost" scheme, were operated by VF-43, based at NAS Oceana, Virginia (USA). In 1988 they were returned and replaced by the F-16N. The 13 aircraft leased to the United States Marine Corps were operated by VMFT-401 at Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Arizona. In addition to the blue-gray painted aircraft, the USMC also had some F-21s painted in Israeli colors and desert "flogger" schemes. These aircraft were replaced by F-5Es when the F-21s were returned in 1989.

The Lun-class (harrier) ekranoplan (NATO reporting name Duck) was a seaplane designed by Rostislav Evgenievich Alexeev and used by the Soviet and Russian navies from 1987 to sometime in the late 1990s. This ground effect aircraft used the extra lift generated by its large wings when close to the surface of the water (about four meters or less). Lun was one of the largest seaplanes ever built, with a length of 73 m (240 ft), rivaling the Hughes H-4 Hercules ("The Spruce Goose") and many jumbo jets.

Orlando, Fla. - Barely visible beneath the wings of a Lockhead P-38 Lighting are the deadly bombs with which this multi-purpose plane can blast enemy troops, ships and gun emplacements. As shown in recent demonstrations at the AAF Tactical Center, Orlando, Fla., the Lockhead P-38, now being used as a fighter-bomber, is capable of carrying bomb pay loads up to 2,000 pounds, thus affording the Allies another potent weapon for use against Germany and Japan in coming offensive.

Rare 4.5 metre high concrete structure near Kilnsea Grange, northwest of Godwin Battery, a relic of the First World War. On the pipe in front of the acoustic mirror was a trumpet-shaped ‘collector head’, a microphone which could pick up the reflected engine sound of Zeppelins approaching from the sea. Wires passed down the pipe to a listener seated in a trench nearby with a stethoscope headset, who would try to determine the distance and bearing of any enemy airships.

The 1940 Waco bi-plane is fitted with a T-38 Talon J-85 jet engine along with the 450 horsepower Pratt & Whitney radial prop engine. With both engines turning the Jet Waco puts out over 4,500 pounds of thrust at over 2,000 horsepower. This year's air show showcased civilian and military aircraft from the Nation's armed forces, which provided many flight demonstrations and static displays. Beechcraft Staggerwing production line.jpg

The Beech YC-43 assembly line, probably Model 17R. This civilian type was the first production staggerwing model and featured a fixed landing gear. The photo was probably taken in the summer or early fall of 1942.
In late 1938, the Air Corps evaluated the Beech Model D17S for possible use as a light liaison aircraft. Three aircraft were purchased and designated as YC-43s. The distinctive five-place biplane featured negatively staggered wings - the lower wing was forward of the upper wing. The plane also had retractable landing gear and a minimum of drag-producing wing supports which combined to give the YC-43 a cruising speed of about 200 miles per hour. After a short flight test program, the YC-43s were sent to Europe to serve as liaison aircraft with the US Air Attachés in London, Paris and Rome. Assembly line - probably Model 17R. This civilian type was the first production staggerwing model and featured a fixed landing gear. Photo was probably taken in the summer or early fall of 1942.Beech YC-43 (retrieved 7 January 2006)

This photo is not from 1942 but taken in late 1933 or early 1934. The aircraft in the foreground is the A17F being built for Goodall Worsted Corporation. Interesting too is that this picture is from inside the Cessna Aircraft plant on Pawnee (then Franklin road) although in a few months Beech Aircraft would move to the closed Travel Air facilitates at Central and Webb as Clyde Cessna and Dwayne Wallace had restarted Cessna aircraft.

My guess is very early 1934 because the first B model (B17L) is under construction behind the A17F being constructed for Goodall Worsted. The first B17L constructed began right after Christmas 1933 and made it's first flight on February 27th 1934. The Goodall Worsted aircraft was delivered May 24th 1934,it actually had final construction on it and delivery at the former Travel Air plant that was now Beech Aircraft by May 1934. The third aircraft in the line should be the B17L that Wichitian Jack Gaty bought,it was delivered on July 4th 1934 In late 1938 he became a sales manager for Beech Aircraft. Look above in the rafters and you can see two Cessna model DC-6 fuselages.

A model of the Transonic Truss-Braced Wing aircraft is seen here installed for testing in the Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel at NASA’s Ames Research Center in California. A model representing just half the airplane, sliced from nose to tail, is used so that the tunnel can fit a larger-scale model holding hundreds of sensors to record data during the test. At about 11 feet long and 7.5 feet from floor to wing tip, this model is 9 percent of the size of the full-scale aircraft.

Contrails over Lisbon, Portugal.jpg
Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, is also its largest city containing one-fifth of the country's population. The superb natural harbor at Lisbon is a commercially important European port handling much of the import-export traffic for Portugal and Spain. The Tagus River, which meets the Atlantic Ocean at Lisbon, originates in central Spain. It provides limited access to the interior Iberian Peninsula because it descends from the great Meseta plateau of central Spain through narrow gorges. Vapor trails, like those crossing this image, are formed by the combustion of airplane fuel when a plane passes through a part of the atmosphere with relatively high humidity. The contrails themselves are actually plumes of ice crystals that can persist in the atmosphere for several hours. Most of these contrails are probably intercontinental flights coming and going from Madrid, Spain.

AF-2S VS-25 NMNA.jpg

A Grumman AF-2S Guardian of the Museum of Naval Aviation painted in the colours of antisubmarine aquadron VS-25 pictured in flight.

Officil NMNA description: "Accepted by the U.S. Navy 6 July 1950, the museum's AF-2S entered squadron service with Experimental and Development Squadron (VX) 1 at Naval Air Station (NAS) Key West, Florida, where it served as a flight test aircraft until February 1952. Between 1952 and 1956, it flew with various Naval Air Reserve Units at NAS Jacksonville, Florida, NAS Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, and NAS South Weymouth, Massachusetts. Stricken from the Navy inventory at the naval storage facility at Litchfield Park, Arizona, on 17 December 1956, the aircraft was eventually sold in 1958 to Clayton Curtis of Frontier Airways. At the time of sale, it had accumulated 1469 hours of flight time. Subsequently acquired by Aero Union Corporation of Reading, California, in 1962, the aircraft served as an aerial tanker fighting forest fires until 1978, at which time it began flying on the exhibition circuit. Fully restored, it was acquired by the museum in 1980. As the seventh AF-2S version of the Guardian built by Grumman, the aircraft was one of the earliest in service and, at the time of its acquisition, it was the only flying example of its kind. Painted in the markings of Antisubmarine Squadron (VS) 25, one of the first squadrons to operate the AF, the aircraft resides in the west wing of the museum. The "30" painted on the cowling is not historically accurate but instead stems from the aircraft's days as a fire fighter. At that it had the radio call sign "Red 30.""

NASA’s X-59 quiet supersonic research aircraft sits on the ramp at Lockheed Martin Skunk Works in Palmdale, California during sunrise, shortly after completion of painting. With its unique design, including a 38-foot-long nose, the X-59 was built to demonstrate the ability to fly supersonic, or faster than the speed of sound, while reducing the typically loud sonic boom produced by aircraft at such speeds to a quieter sonic “thump”. The X-59 is the centerpiece of NASA’s Quesst mission, which seeks to solve one of the major barriers to supersonic flight over land, currently banned in the United States, by making sonic booms quieter.

KC-10 Extender from C-141 cockpit.jpg

A KC-10A Extender aircraft from the 22nd Air Refueling Wing returns to base after participating in a joint U.S./New Zealand operation to resupply both South Pole and McMurdo Stations in Antarctica. The operation was staged from Det. 2, 619th Military Airlift Support Squadron, at the New Zealand International Airport, Christchurch. The KC-10 Extender is an air-to-air tanker aircraft in service with the United States Air Force derived from the civilian DC-10-30 airliner. The KC-10 was the second consecutive McDonnell Douglas transport aircraft to be selected by the US Air Force following the C-9 Nightingale. Conversion to the KC-10 involved only minor modifications to the DC-10-30, the largest of which was the addition of a boom control station in the rear of the fuselage and extra fuel tanks under the main deck. First deliveries to the Strategic Air Command (then in control of AAR assets) commenced in 1981.

The USAF Strategic Air Command had KC-10 Extenders in service from 1981 through 1991, when they were re-assigned to the Air Mobility Command.

Stricklin, who was not injured, ejected after both guiding the jet away from the crowd of more than 60,000 people and ensuring he could not save the aircraft. This was only the second crash since the Air Force began using F-16 Falcons for its demonstration team in 1982. The ACES II ejection seat performed flawlessly. (U.S. Air Force photo by Staff Sgt.
