Starting the Beekeeping
Apis mellifera scutellata
- Common Name: Africanized honey bee
- Photographer: Scott Bauer, USDA Agricultural Research Service, United States
- Descriptor: Feature(s)
- Description: Closeup of Africanized honey bees (AHBs) surrounding a European queen honey bee (EHB), marked with a pink dot for identification. Since AHBs arrived in Texas in 1990, they've mated with EHBs and spread throughout the Southwest. But rather than commingling, AHBs tend to replace EHBs, partly because EHB queen bees mate disproportionately with African drones.

he first step in the honey extraction process is to remove all of The cell cappings. This is done by holding each frame in a vertical position, and using a long bladed knife or a uncapping fork to cut off the cappings on each side of the comb.

301 497 5840A European honey bee (Apis mellifera) extracts nectar from an Aster flower using its proboscis. Tiny hairs covering the bee's body maintain a slight electrostatic charge, causing pollen from the flower's anthers to stick to the bee, allowing for pollination when the bee moves on to another flower.
