Richard Michael Mullane (* 10. září 1943, Wichita Falls, Texas, Spojené státy americké)[1] je americký důstojník, zkušební pilot a astronaut, který letěl třikrát do vesmíru.

Životopis

Titul inženýra letectví získal roku 1975 na technologickém institutu vojenského letectva a stal se z něj zkušební pilot. Oženil se a má tři děti. V roce 1978 byl přijat, tehdy v hodnosti kapitána vojenského letectva, do NASA mezi kandidáty v Johnsonově vesmírném středisku na post astronauta – pilota.[2]

Lety do vesmíru

Premiéru si Mullane odbyl na palubě raketoplánu Discovery na konci léta roku 1984. Jednalo se o misi STS-41-D, v COSPAR označenou 1984-093A, na palubě bylo celkem 6 astronautů. Během letu vypustili tři družice. Startovali na Floridě z mysu Canaveral, přistáli v Kalifornii na letecké základně a kosmodromu Edwards

Druhý let absolvoval po čtyřleté odmlce, v prosinci 1988. Byla to čtyřdenní mise STS-27, dle COSPAR 1988-106A, s raketoplánem Atlantis. Byl to let utajovaný, s špionážní družicí Lacrosse a proto jeho posádku tvořila pouze pětice důstojníků americké armády. Mullane byl tehdy plukovníkem.

Potřetí a naposledy letěl roku 1990. Posádka Atlantisu byla opět pětičlenná, šestidenní mise měla označení STS-36, dle COSPAR 1990-019A. I tentokrát se jednalo o vojenskou misi s vypuštěním špionážní družice.

  • The official mission insignia for the 41-D Space Shuttle flight features the Discovery - NASA's third orbital vehicle - as it makes its maiden voyage. The ghost ship represents the orbiter's namesakes which have figured prominently in the history of exploration. The Space Shuttle Discovery heads for new horizons to extend that proud tradition. The patch depicts the Space Shuttle lifting off against the multi-colored backdrop of a rainbow, symbolizing the triumphal return to flight of our nation's manned space program. The design also commemorates the memory of the crew of Challenger mission STS-51-L, represented by the seven stars. The names of the flight crewmembers of STS-27 are located along the border of the patch.

STS-36 Mission Insignia

Description: The dominant theme of the STS-36, designed by the five astronaut crewmembers, is, in their words ...the essential role that space plays in preserving the blessings of freedom and liberty for America. The crew used the eagle to symbolize our country's commitment to strength and vigilance; its domain is not bound by the limits of Earth but reaches out to the star. The Shuttle, they express majestically beginning its journey into orbit demonstrates how man and machine work together for the security of our nation. A crew spokesman went on to say the flag represents the patriotism and love for America possessed by each member of the five-man crew and signifies the honor accorded them through participation in national defense.
