Ubuntu ([ù.ˈɓún.tʼú] v zuluštině a xhoštině) je filosofie subsaharské Afriky a etický systém zaměřující se na mezilidské vztahy a pomoc bližnímu. Slovo „ubuntu“ má své kořeny v jihoafrických bantuských jazycích.

Význam

Existuje mnoho možných překladů ubuntu do češtiny:

  • Lidskost vůči ostatním.
  • Jsem, protože jsme.
  • Člověkem lidmi, tj. osoba se stává člověkem jinými lidmi; člověk je člověkem díky druhým lidem.
  • Jsem, protože ty jsi.
  • Jsem tím, kým jsem, díky tomu, kým jsme všichni. [1]

Princip

Ubuntu je považováno za tradiční africký filosofický koncept. Hlavním principem filosofie ubuntu je víra v univerzální pouto, které spojuje celé lidstvo.[2]

This is a promotional video clip for Ubuntu Linux, published by Canonical Ltd. in 2006. It contains an excerpt of an interview with Nelson Mandela by Tim Modise, where Mandela is asked to describe the concept of "ubuntu". Only part of Mandela's answer is shown, and it is partly underlaid with music. In the full interview, Mandela's answer was as follows:

"In the old days when we were young, a traveller through a country would stop at a village, and he didn't have to ask for food or for water: once he stops, the people give him food, entertain him. That is one aspect of Ubuntu, but it will have various aspects. Ubuntu does not mean that people should not enrich themselves. The question therefore is, are you going to do so in order to enable the community around you, and enable it to improve? These are the important things in life. And if one can do that, you have done something very important which will be appreciated."
