William Francis Readdy (* 24. ledna 1952 v Quonset Point, stát Rhode Island, USA) je námořní letec a americký kosmonaut. Ve vesmíru byl třikrát.

Život

Studium a zaměstnání

Po absolvování střední školy McLean High School ve městě McLean nastoupil v roce 1970 do námořní akademie United States Naval Academy. Akademii ukončil v roce 1974 a u armády zůstal. V letech 1980 až 1981 absolvoval školu námořních testovacích pilotů v Patuxent River.

V roce 1986 byl přijat do NASA, po výcviku byl o rok později zařazen do oddílu astronautů. V něm zůstal do roku 1999. U NASA poté zůstal v různých řídících funkcích i pracovištích.

Lety do vesmíru

Na oběžnou dráhu se v raketoplánech dostal třikrát a strávil ve vesmíru 28 dní, 0 hodin a 44 minut. Byl 263. člověkem ve vesmíru.

STS-42 Mission Insignia

Designed by the crewmembers, the STS- 42 Intemational Microgravity Lab- 1 insignia depicts the orbiter with the Spacelab module aboard. The spacecraft is oriented in a quiescent, tail-to-Earth, gravity-gradient attitude to best support the various microgravity payloads and experiments. The international composition of the crew is depicted by symbols representing Canada and the European Space Agency. The number 42 is represented by six white stars --- four on one side of the orbiter and two on the other. The single gold star above Earth's horizon honors the memory of astronaut Manley L. (Sonny) Carter, who was killed earlier this year in a commuter plane crash. A crew spokesperson stated that Carter ...was our crewmate, colleague and friend. Blue letters set against white give the surnames of the five astronauts and two payload specialists for the flight.

STS-51 Patch

Designed by the crewmembers, the STS-51 crew patch honors all who have contributed to mission success. It symbolizes NASA's continuing quest to increase mankind's knowledge and use of space through this multi-faceted mission. The gold star represents the U.S. Advanced Communications Technology Satellite (ACTS) boosted by the Transfer Orbit Stage (TOS). The rays below the ACT\TOS represent the innovative communication technologies to be tested by this experiment. The stylized Shuttle Pallet Satellite (SPAS) represents the German-sponsored ASTRO\SPAS mission. The constellation Orion below SPAS is representative of the types of stellar objects to be studied by its experimenters. The stars in Orion also commemorate the astronauts who have sacrificed their lives for the space program. The ascending spiral, symbolizing America's continuing commitment to leadership in space exploration and development, originates with the thousands of persons who ensure the success of each Shuttle flight. The five large white stars, representing the five crewmembers, along with the single gold star, form the mission's numerical designation.
