William James (1866, Walsall Spojené království – 1948, Kanada) byl plodný kanadský fotograf anglického původu. Jeho dílo má široký záběr, je známý především svými fotografiemi architektury, reportážemi a portréty z Toronta v Ontariu. Jeho práce byly často sbírány a publikovány.[1][2][3]
Život a dílo
William James přišel do Kanady z Anglie v roce 1906 ve svých 40 letech. Od roku 1909 pracoval jako fotograf na volné noze a byl zakládajícím prezidentem Kanadské asociace fotografů.
Mike Filey, dlouhodobý autor tematických sloupečků o historii Toronta v magazínu Toronto Sun, označil Jamese za technického inovátora.[3] Instituce City of Toronto Archives opatruje sbírku více než 6 000 Jamesových fotografií.[3]

Aviation pioneer John Alexander Douglas McCurdy at the controls of an aircraft. The City of Toronto archival notation reads: "Item consists of one photograph of a man sitting in an airplane. Information provided by a researcher indicates that the man is probably J.A.D. McCurdy in a bi-plane with 7-cylinder Gnome rotary engine, and that the event is probably either the Aviation Meet held at Donlands Farm, Todmorden Mills, August 3-5, 1911, or the Aviation Meet, Hamilton, July 27-29, 1911."

"Making a tunnel under Albert Street for Eaton's". This was the first public pedestrian tunnel constructed in Toronto, linking the Eaton's department store with the Eaton's Annex building at the corner of Albert and James Streets. The same tunnel (refurbished over the years) is still in use as part of Toronto's PATH system, connected the Toronto Eaton Centre to the Bell Trinity office complex.

Front of Comique movie theatre. Note on the back of photograph at City of Toronto Archives says that the theatre operated from 1908 to 1914. One of the films advertised (Jean the Matchmaker) was released September 20, 1910. The admission price was 5 cents. Theatre was located on Yonge Street. In 2007, this location was occupied by the Hard Rock Cafe. As of 2019, the building is occupied by the Shoppers Drug Mart Corporation.
