Popis:
"L’Allégorie de l’Enfer" (c. 1890) ("The Allegory of Hell") is probably a retrospectively applied name in the catalogue of Delville's works, unrelated to the depiction of the drawing. According to Brendan Cole ([1]), this painting is linked to a 1892 poem by Delville called "Azraël" (published in his book Les Horizons Hantés), where Azrael, the Archangel of Death, appears with a blazing light to a dying King Solomon. Other elements of the drawing are also correlated to this poem: the lynxes near the king; sphinxes; serpents on the background. In the middle of the drawing there is a fountain surrounded by a multitude of people, and next to the king is also a grieving figure.
