Předtím, než následkem Versailleské smlouvy připadlo Alsasko-Lotrinsko v roce 1919 Francii, měl německé občanství a jeho firma E. E. C. Mathis byla vedena jako německý podnik. Až po válce se stala francouzskou akciovou společností.
