British mechanical engineer Joseph Whitworth proposed making a firearm channel for rifles and artillery pieces in the form of a hexagonal prism (see figure), also twisted about an axis along a helical line; the middle part of the oblong projectile had the same appearance. With this shape and precision of finishing, the projectile adjoined most of its surface and could get a large number of revolutions even with a small charge, since the twisting of the barrel could be given a great steepness without fear of disrupting the leading parts of the projectile.
