BASINGSTOKE HUNDRED BASING orOLD BASING tympanum of which are the arms of the family.The south front has an additional story rising abovethe frieze of the portico, but the rest of the mainstructure is of two stories above the basement. Thewings also are of two stories. In plan the house is of an E shape, the mainportion having two ranges of apartments. Theentrance hall is in the middle of the north range,and the great saloon to the south of it, to the west ofthe entrance hall is the main staircase with officesbeyond, and to the east the billiard-room with thestudy beyond. In the southern range to the west ofthe saloon is the morning-room, and at the end a largedining-room with a semicircular west end, and to theeast of the saloon a boudoir and large drawing-roomor ball-room more or less in character with theother end. The eastern wing is devoted to thefamily residential purposes and the western is occu-pied by the offices. On the first floor are bed-rooms, &c. William the lourth M
