Painted while Vice-Admiral of the Red and Commander-in-Chief of the English Mediterranean fleet, 1742-44. In the background is Hyères Bay, Toulon, with Mathews' second in command, Richard Lestock's flagship the 90-gun 'Neptune', and units of his squadron on the right; the stern of Mathews's flagship the 90-gun 'Namur', is on the extreme left of the picture.

Thomas Mathews byl britský admirál, účastník dynastických a koloniálních válek první poloviny 18. století. Za války o rakouské dědictví dosáhl hodnosti admirála a byl vrchním velitelem ve Středomoří (1742–1744). Po neúspěšné bitvě u Toulonu byl předvolán před válečný soud a vyškrtnut ze seznamu námořních důstojníků. Poté žil v soukromí na svých statcích ve Walesu, do smrti zůstal poslancem Dolní sněmovny. .. pokračovat ve čtení
