Anglická literatura byla dlouho synonymem pro literaturu Britských ostrovů vůbec. Byla do ní zahrnována jednak tvorba autorů, působících na území Anglie a píšících i v jiných jazycích než je angličtina, jednak tvorba anglicky píšících autorů z Walesu, Skotska, Irska a z území britských kolonií.
