Bristol Beaufort VIII ‘DD931 - L’ (17096572237)
This is a complicated composite airframe made from Mk VIII components recovered from Papua New Guinea. It has the nominal identity of ‘A9-559’ from which some fuselage components were used in the rebuild. It was exchanged for gate guard Spitfire XVI ‘RW382’ and the restored airframe was delivered to RAF Cardington in June 1991. By early 1992 it was on display at Hendon. It is painted to represent Beaufort IIA ‘DD931’ of 42sqn and has been given the early rudder shape, among other modifications, to more accurately represent the earlier mark. Work on the aircraft’s interior continues, as little equipment was available during the rebuild. It is the only Beaufort in Europe. RAF Museum, Hendon, London, UK.
