A Navy Landing Craft Utility approaches the well deck of the amphibious assault ship USS Tarawa (LHA 1) while participating in Rim of the Pacific Exercise 2004 off the coast of Hawaii on July 6, 2004. Rim of the Pacific is an international exercise that enhances the joint cooperation and proficiency of maritime and air forces of Australia, Canada, Chile, Peru, Japan, Republic of Korea, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Třída Tarawa byla třída amerických vrtulníkových výsadkových lodí. Jejich úkolem byla přeprava, výsadek a zásobování jednotky námořní pěchoty pomocí vrtulníků a výsadkových člunů. Mohly jim přitom též poskytovat podporu pomocí kolmostartujících útočných letounů. Sloužit mohly též při odminování, živelních pohromách či jako velitelská plavidla. Celkem bylo postaveno pět jednotek této třídy, zařazených do služby v letech 1976-1980. Jako poslední jednotka třídy byla roku 2015 vyřazena USS Peleliu, nahrazená novou vrtulníkovou výsadkovou lodí USS America (LHA-6). .. pokračovat ve čtení
