Portrait of Edward Seymour, 1st Earl of Hertford (cr 1537), (later in 1547 created 1st Duke of Somerset & Lord Protector 1547–49); by unknown artist, Collection of Marquess of Bath, Longleat House, Wiltshire. The Latin inscription either side of his head is: "E(dwardus) SE(mour) C(omes) HER(tfordiensis)" ("Edward Seymour, Earl of Hertford"). He wears the chain of the Order of the Garter from which hangs the Great George.
According to art historian Roy Strong, there is only one absolutely certain portrait of Seymour, a miniature painted by Nicholas Hilliard in 1560 from an earlier painting. The features in the Hilliard support George Vertue's identification (c. 1745) of the present portrait as of Seymour. (Roy Strong, Tudor and Jacobean Portraits, London: HMSO, 1969, p. 295)
