Byl kreolského původu, ale vzhledem k předčasné smrti matky a pracovnímu zaneprázdnění otce ho vychovali indiáni. Vystudoval Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos v Limě, kde později vyučoval etnologii, zabýval se tradicemi andských domorodců a jejich konfrontací s moderním způsobem života.
