Wooden model of a ship. With a ship model, the Institute of Classical Archaeology, University of Heidelberg, participates in the celebration for the 150th anniversary of the founding of the National Archaeological Museum. Its construction was based on the representations of ships, as those are preserved in the miniature fresco of the Fleet that decorated the West House of Akrotiri of Thera, who, being daring seafarers, visit various coastal cities. One of the cities could be identified with Akrotiri, while another with Knossos. In any case, it is certain that this is an illustrated narrative of a journey across the Mediterranean, which offers useful information on fauna, flora, technology, navigation, apparel, weaponry and even on the "urban" environment of the era (about 1700 B.C.).
