This is the skin of a patient after 3 days of measles infection; treated at the New York - Presbyterian Hospital. Prior to widespread immunization, measles was common in childhood, with more than 90% of infants and children infected by age 12. Recently, fewer than 1,000 measles cases have been reported annually since 1993.

Spalničky jsou virové infekční onemocnění provázené charakteristickou vyrážkou. Původcem tohoto onemocnění je virus spalniček, jehož přirozeným hostitelem je výhradně člověk. Nákaza se šíří vzdušnou cestou – kapénkami. V zemích, kde není zavedeno očkování, jsou spalničky nebezpečným, život ohrožujícím onemocněním. Z celosvětového pohledu patří toto onemocnění mezi nejčastější příčiny úmrtí dětí do 5 let. Více než 95 % úmrtí na spalničky bylo zaznamenáno v zemích s nízkým hrubým domácím produktem a špatnou zdravotní infrastrukturou.
