School apparatus for performing Øersted's experiment demonstrating that electric currents create magnetic fields, first performed 21 April 1820 by Danish scientist Hans Christian Øersted. It consists of ana wire suspended over a compass needle. When an electric current.is passed through the wire as shown, the compass needle deflects to a right angle with the wire.
