The Paris Observatory in the beginning of the eighteenth century. The tower on the right was the wooden Marly Tower, originally built to lift water for the Versailles reservoirs and fountains, that astronomer and director Giovanni Domenico Cassini moved to the grounds at great expense for the mounting of long tubed telescopes and even longer tubeless Aerial telescopes[1]

Machine de Marly, byl francouzský čerpací stroj dodávající vodu do nedalekého zámku ve Versailles, dokončený v roce 1684. Král Ludvík XIV. potřeboval velké množství vody pro kašny svých zahrad v zámku Versailles. Objem vody potřebný pro tyto kašny na jeden den, nebyl o mnoho menší, než celkové množství vody na den pro Paříž. .. pokračovat ve čtení
