Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif. – Inside a protected clean room tent on Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, a worker (right) examines part of the second half of the fairing to be installed around NASA’s Interstellar Boundary Explorer, or IBEX, spacecraft. The fairing is a molded structure that fits flush with the outside surface of the rocket and forms an aerodynamically smooth nose cone, protecting the spacecraft during launch and ascent. The IBEX satellite will make the first map of the boundary between the Solar System and interstellar space. IBEX is targeted for launch from the Kwajalein Atoll, a part of the Marshall Islands in the Pacific Ocean, on Oct. 19. IBEX will be launched aboard a Pegasus rocket dropped from under the wing of an L-1011 aircraft flying over the Pacific Ocean. Pegasus (raketa)Rakety Pegasus jsou kosmické nosné rakety vyvíjené a provozované nejdříve společností Orbital Sciences Corporation a po jejím sloučení Orbital ATK. Rakety jsou tří- nebo čtyřstupňové, první tři stupně jsou poháněny motory na tuhé pohonné látky, čtvrtý stupeň je poháněn motorem na hydrazin. Jako odpalovací platforma slouží speciálně upravený letoun, který raketu vynese a přibližně ve výšce 12 000 metrů dojde k jejímu vypuštění. Raketa je vybavena křídly a v prvotní fázi letu se chová jako raketový letoun. Rakety byly vyráběny v několika verzích a první start se konal v roce 1990. K říjnu 2019 nebyly plánovány žádné budoucí starty, ale raketa zůstává v aktivní službě. .. pokračovat ve čtení
