place in the greenhouse ; its branches are of areddish colour, the flowers on very slender drooping stalks,several grouped together, the calyx deep red, tube cylindrical,petals deep rose-colour; this species is readily increased bycuttings, and thrives best if exposed to the outer air insummer, and kept dry in winter. Besides these there arecordifolia, grandiflora, splendens, fulgens, etc. etc. It is con-sidered a good plan to take, in August, cuttings three incheslong, under a joint, with a sharp knife, taking off some ofthe lower leaves; to plant them in fine sandy soil, wateringfreely, and placing the pots in a hotbed, or in a shadysituation, putting hand-glasses over them when the leavesare dry; this latter treatment should be continued for aboutsix weeks, when they will have struck root, and be readyfor potting; these, with care during the winter, will makegood plants in the spring. If tall plants are wanted, theshoots in the spring should be thinned out to three or four Haxe JOT

MYRTACEiE. 257 of the strongest, or even one, taking off all the lateralshoots till the desired height is attained, and giving themrich soil and a cool greenhouse in winter; the pots shouldbe very well drained. LOPEZIA. Gen.-Char. (Monandria Monogynia.) Limb of the calyx four-parted, falling off; petals four, irregular; stamens two, oneanther fertile, the other sterile and petal-like. Z. macrophylla is a small shrub, with leaves slightly hairy,but handsome; flowers large, bright red, having only thesmall, globose ovary, green; this is a native of Mexico,bearing the greenhouse here, and flowering in March. L.racemom, cordata, kirsuta, and lineata have purple flowers,excepting the last, which has them more of a pink hue :these are all greenhouse annuals or perennials from Mexico;some species also from the same country are hardy.
