24 3/4 x 19 5/8 inches (63 x 50 cm). The source describes this image as "said to be Robert Devereux, 3rd Earl of Essex" (January 11, 1591 – 14 September 1646), which does not coincide with the date and age of the sitter in the inscription. The source attribution to Category:William Larkin is unlikely as the form of the inscription does not match other works by Larkin.

Hrabě z Essexu je anglický šlechtický titul, který byl poprvé udělen ve 12. století anglickým králem Štěpánem III. z Blois. Titul hraběte z Essexu byl v průběhu dějin udělen celkem devětkrát různým rodům, ve 13. a 14. století byla s titulem spojena navíc čestná dědičná hodnost vrchního velitele (konstábla) Anglického království. Známými nositeli titulu byli první ministr Jindřicha VIII. Thomas Cromwell nebo irský místokrál Robert Devereux, 2. hrabě z Essexu. Od roku 1661 užívá titul hrabat z Essexu rodina Capell. Arthur Capell, 1. hrabě z Essexu (1631–1683) byl vlivným politikem za vlády Karla II. a na hraběte z Essexu byl povýšen v roce 1661.
