Vypráví o mladé ženě, která se vdá za staršího muže, vdovce, a přichází na jeho rodové sídlo Manderley na cornwallském pobřeží. Zde se v atmosféře narůstající tísně pokouší sžít s prostředím vyšší společnosti, přičemž na každém kroku se setkává se stopami předchozí manželky svého chotě, všeobecně oblíbené, krásné a nespoutané Rebeky, která se za nevyjasněných okolností tragicky utopila. Román klade značný důraz na psychologické prokreslení hlavní hrdinky a na sílu temných tajemství minulosti.
