Samuel Smiles byl skotský spisovatel, esejista, kazatel, lékař a politický reformátor. Ačkoli vedl kampaň pro platformu chartistů, prohlásil, že více pokroku pocházelo z nových přístupů a názorů, než z nových zákonů. Ve svém vrcholném díle, Self-Help z roku 1859, prosazoval šetrnost a tvrdil, že chudoba je způsobena převážně nezodpovědnými návyky a zároveň útočí na materialismus a vlády typu „Laissez faire".
