First per-formance, Prague, May 30, 1866, where the success of the workled to Smetanas appointment as director of the Prague opera.Produced at the Vienna Music Festival 1892, from which time itsfame really dates, and it is now to be found in the repertoire ofnearly every German opera house. First London production, DruryLane, June 26, 1895, and at Covent Garden in 1907. First heardin America at the Metropolitan Opera House, New York, February19, 1909, with Destinn, Jorn, Didur and Reiss, under the directionof Gustav Mahler.
