- Hong Kong Island in 1842 and Kowloon in 1860 were ceded to British Empire rule.

- Western territories corresponds to the Protectorate General to Pacify the West.
- Not shown are the Uyghurs, and Balhae, who were also active in Northern China; Tufan Kingdom in the Tibetan Plateau; Nanchao Kingdom in modern day Yunnan and Sichuan.

- The state of Wei(魏) (in magenta red) should not be confused with the smaller state of Wei(衛) (in pink); whose names share the same pronounciation in Standard Mandarin and therefore have identical romanizations.
- Not shown are the Hung Nou to the north, remnants of the state of Yut in the south, and the clans of Ba and Shu in the southwest.
