The dock landing ship USS Whidbey Island (LSD 41) and the Romanian minesweeper Lt. Dimitrie Nicolescu (F-29) sail near one another during Summer Storm 2011 in the Black Sea Aug. 2, 2011. Summer Storm is a joint exercise involving U.S. Marines deployed as part of the Black Sea Rotational Force, U.S. Sailors and members of the Romanian naval infantry. Training scenarios were focused on amphibious operations, counterpiracy measures and peacekeeping operations. Whidbey Island deployed as part of the Bataan Amphibious Ready Group, supporting maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of responsibility.
