Pacific Ocean (Nov. 4, 2006) - With a MH-60S Seahawk assigned to the “Island Knights” of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron Two Five (HSC-25) flying as a channel guard, USS Essex (LHD 2) passes the Capul Island Lighthouse as it transits through the San Bernardino Straits after completing a port visit to Subic Bay, Philippines. Essex and 31st MEU were in the Philippines to participate in bilateral exercises, Exercise Talon Vision and Amphibious Landing Exercise (PHIBLEX 07), with the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFR). Třída Wasp je třída amerických víceúčelových vrtulníkových výsadkových lodí. Celkem bylo postaveno osm jednotek pojmenovaných Wasp, Essex, Kearsarge, Boxer, Bataan, Bonhomme Richard, Iwo Jima a Makin Island. Ve službě nahradily lodi třídy Iwo Jima. Jsou určeny k naložení, přepravě, provedení výsadku, velení a následné podpoře jednotky americké námořní pěchoty o 2 000 mužů. Ta je z nich přepravována vzduchem pomocí vrtulníků, či po moři vyloďovacími čluny a obojživelnými vozidly.
