On the Reykjanes Peninsula in southern Iceland, a series of volcanic eruptions has been ongoing since December 2023. The eruption has affected the area near Grindavik, a small fishing town 30 miles southwest of Reykjavik. In addition to producing gas pollution, the volcanic activity has changed the landscape of the surrounding area. These changes caused by the lava flow can be seen in these Sentinel-2 images from October 2023 and March 2024. The Copernicus Sentinel satellites contribute to the monitoring of volcanoes around the world, thereby helping authorities better understand hazardous situations and protect communities from their impact.
