Wartime marriage (24994563894)
Photographer: May Moore
Place: Sydney, NSW
Stella Davies volunteered for the Australian Army Nursing Service in March 1915, serving in Egypt and France with No. 1 Australian General Hospital. In March 1917 she married Gerald Hogan of the 2nd Field Artillery and they welcomed their first child, Geraldine, in November that year. Restrictions on nurses meant that Davies was forced to resign following her marriage. She remained in England for the duration of the war, returning with her husband and daughter to Australia in 1919.
After the war Gerald Hogan was appointed the Australian Crown Law Officer at Rabaul, New Britain. Still stationed there in 1942, he was captured and interned by the Japanese. He was killed when the transport ship Montevideo Maru, carrying some 1,050 Australian prisoners to China’s Hainan Island, was sunk by the American submarine USS Sturgeon near the Philippines on 1 July 1942.
