J=1 SOME ACCOUNT OF ALTHORP. 1 H E House and Park at Althorp* are situated in the parish ofGreat Brington, in New Bottle Grove Hundred, in the county ofNorthampton, at the distance of about six miles from Northamp-ton. This domain has been possessed by the Spencer Familyupwards of three centuries ; but the exact period of the erectionof the house seems to be unknown. There is however no questionof its having received its principal improvements during the timeof the first Earl of Sunderland, (1636-1643) who was son of thesecond Baron Spencer. The Lady of this Earl (daughter ofRobert Sidney, second Earl of Leicester, and better known as theSacharissa of Waller the poet) erected, and covered in, the greatstaircase—which had been formerly an interior court yard, in thefashion of the times. From that period, to the present, both thehouse and park have continued to receive improvements whichwill be duly noticed in the order of these pages. Spencerové

Spencerové jsou anglický šlechtický rod doložený poprvé v 15. století. V době anglické občanské války dosáhli titulu hrabat ze Sunderlandu (1643), později dědictvím získali titul vévodů z Marlborough (1733). V 17.-18. století významně zasahovali do anglických dějin i v dalších generacích zastávali vysoké posty ve státní správě, armádě a námořnictvu, celkem 13 členů rodu obdrželo nejvyšší britské vyznamenání, Podvazkový řád. Nejvýraznějšími osobnostmi z rodu se ve 20. století stali Winston Churchill a princezna Diana.
