Shane T. McCoy was a Navy photographer, the only official photographer present on January 11, 2002, the day the camp was opened. On January 17, 2002, public affairs officers published a series of photos, including this photo, which had been taken for internal use only. Karen Geenberg referred to McCoy's photos on more than a dozen of the pages of her book the "Least Worst Place". Carol Rosenberg, interviewed McCoy, for the Miami Herald. He told her that SECDEF Donald Rumsfeld personally told him he did not hold McCoy responsible for the controversy the publication of the photos stirred.
