Platk 68. A KAYAN PARTY SITTING IN THP: GALLERY OF A LONG HOUSE. DAILY LIFE 127 in his sleep, he touches upon local politics at firstdelicately; then warming up he speaks more directlyand plainly. He may become much excited andgesticulate freely, even leaping into the air andtwirling round on one foot with outstretched rightarm in a fashion that directs his remarks to eachand all of the listening circle; but, even thoughhe may find occasion to admonish or reproach, oreven hint at a threat, his speech never transgressesthe strictest bounds of courtesy. Having thusunburdened himself of whatever thoughts andemotions are evoked by the occasion, he takes fromthe attendant Ganymede a bumper cup of spiritand breaks into song. Standing before his guestand swinging the cup repeatedly almost to his (theguests) lips, he exhorts him in complimentary andrhyming phrases to accept his remarks in a friendlyspirit, and reminds him of the age and strength oftheir family and tribal relations, referring
