The U.S. aircraft carrier USS Midway (CV-41) being replenished by the U.S. Military Sealift Command fleet oiler USNS Hassayampa (T-AO-145), ca. 1983. The date given (1988) has to be incorrect, as Carrier Air Wing Five (CVW-5) operated McDonnell Douglas F/A-18A Hornet fighters since 1986. Up to 1984 CVW-5 was the only air wing to operate the McDonnell Douglas RF-4B Phantom II reconnaissance planes of VMFP-3, of which at least one can be identified (fourth plane from the bow). Other indicators of the photo date are the forward mast head light which was installed in 1983 and the absence of the SPN-38 radar mast which was removed prior to the 1981 deployment.
