Maritime Museum of Quebec was closed as it still was very early when I arrived.

This is HMCS BRAS D'OR - To put this picture of the FHE 400 in perspective, the ship had a full load weight of 200 tons, a length of 151 ft, a hull beam of 21.5 ft, and a foil span of 66 ft. Crew size - 29. She was designed by DeHavilland, completed in 1967, and arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia on 1 July 1968 to begin a long series of trials. From September of 1968 until July 1971, when the trials terminated, the ship logged 648 hours, 552 hullborne, and 96 hours foilborne. The most operationally representative trial was a 2,500 mile voyage to Hamilton, Bermuda, and Norfolk, Virginia, in June 1971. Foilborne, BRAS D'OR exceeded her calm-water design speed, achieving 63 knots at full load in 3 to 4 foot waves. I believe it was the fastest warship in the world in its day. L’Islet, Quebec, Canada

German sailors during blockade duty in Souda Bay, Crete. Following the repeated uprisings by the Cretan people, in 1889, 1895 and 1897, the Great Powers decided to restore order by governing the island temporarily through a committee of four admirals. Germany sent the armored warship SMS Oldenburg to Crete. It operated with Allied ships from early January 1898 until being recalled in March (SMS Oldenburg is not the ship visible in the right background). On 25 August 1898, a Turkish mob massacred hundreds of Cretan Greeks, the British Consul and 17 British soldiers. As a result, the Turkish forces were expelled from the island by the Great Powers in November 1898.

Operation Pedestal and the Siege of Malta, August 1942
The damaged tanker OHIO, supported by Royal Navy destroyers, approaches Malta after an epic voyage across the Mediterranean as part of convoy WS21S (Operation Pedestal) to deliver fuel and other vital supplies to the besieged island. OHIO's back was broken and her engines failed during heavy German and Italian attacks. Because of the vital importance of her cargo (10,000 tons of fuel which would enable the aircraft and submarines based at Malta to return to the offensive), she could not be abandoned. In a highly unusual manoeuvre, two destroyers supported her to provide buoyancy and power for the remainder of the voyage. The OHIO's captain was subsequently awarded the George Cross. The OHIO itself was sunk outside the harbour after discharging its cargo.

Bathyscaphe Trieste.jpg
Bathyscaphe Trieste, a Italian-built deep-diving research submersible vehicle, which with its crew of two reached a record maximum depth of about 10,911 metres (35,797 ft), in the first descent of the deepest known part of the Earth's oceans, the Challenger Deep, in the Mariana Trench near Guam in the Pacific, on 23 January 1960. It is being hoisted out of the water in a tropical port, circa 1958-59, soon after her purchase by the US Navy. The craft consists of a 2 meter spherical steel pressure vessel constituting the 2-man crew cabin, made to withstand the extreme pressure suspended below a large tank of gasoline making up the bulk of the vessel. The gasoline being lighter than water makes the craft buoyant, while its incompressibility withstands the pressure of the surrounding water without requiring a heavy pressure vessel.

The seven wrecked destroyers on Honda point. The lost ships were:
  • USS Delphy (DD-261) was the flagship in the column. She ran aground on the shore at 20 knots (37 km/h). After running aground, she sounded her siren. The siren alerted some of the later ships in the column, helping them avoid the tragedy. Three men died. Eugene Dooman, a State Department expert on Japan, who survived, was aboard as a guest of Captain Watson, whom he had met in Japan.
  • USS S. P. Lee (DD-310) was following a few hundred yards behind. She saw the Delphy suddenly stop, and turned to port (left) in response. As a result, she ran aground on the coast.
  • USS Young (DD-312) made no move to turn. She tore her hull open on submerged rocks, and the inrush of water capsized her onto her starboard side. Twenty men died.
  • USS Woodbury (DD-309) turned to starboard, but struck an offshore rock.
  • USS Nicholas (DD-311) turned to port and also hit a rock.
  • USS Fuller (DD-297) stuck next to the Woodbury.
  • USS Chauncey (DD-296) made an attempt to rescue sailors from the capsized Young. She ran aground.

A hydrofoil is a boat with wing-like foils mounted on struts below the hull. As the craft increases its speed the hydrofoils develop enough lift for the boat to become foilborne - i.e. to raise the hull up and out of the water. This results in a great reduction in drag and a corresponding increase in speed.

Wager's Action off Cartagena, 28 May 1708.jpg

The English painter Samuel Scott (1702-1772) specialised in marine painting and views of London. A strong influence of the art of Willem van de Velde the Younger can be detected, particularly in his early work. This painting refers to Commodore (later Admiral) Charles Wager’s assault on a Spanish treasure fleet off Cartagena in modern-day Colombia on 28 May 1708. Wager’s vessel, the ‘Expedition’, 70 guns, is shown in the centre attacking the Spanish flagship, the ‘San José’, 60 guns. The force of the gunfire seems to blow the Spanish vessel apart in a cloud of smoke and flames, reflected on the water. The other two English ships to the right are the ‘Kingston’, 60 guns, and ‘Portland’, 54 guns. However, Wager was not well supported by his squadron whose captains were court martialled for not having performed their duty, and duly dismissed from their posts (Campbell and Berkenhout, ‘Lives of the British Admirals…’, vol.3 (London, 1785), p.210). Whilst Wager obtained enough from the supporting Spanish ships to make him rich, the ‘San José’ and the bulk of the fleet’s gold, silver and emeralds sank several hundred feet to the seabed, earning her the unofficial title of “holy grail of shipwrecks”.

This picture may have been the original used for the design of Wager’s monument in the north transept of Westminster Abbey, completed 1747 by the Flemish-born sculptor Peter Scheemakers, who is recorded in a sale catalogue of 1756 as owning a picture by “Mr Scot (sic)” of very nearly identical size (the present item is in fact two inches wider) entitled “The Taking the Galeons by Sir Charles Wager”. Wager’s death (24 May 1743) and the monument’s unveiling have therefore served as earliest and latest respective dates for its production. Scott seems to have used a drawing by van de Velde as a model for this composition and the ships are probably also based on older models rather than eyewitness accounts of the event.

Manila, Philippines (May 23, 2006) - The Military Sealift Command (MSC) hospital ship USNS Mercy (T-AH 19) sits anchored off of the coast of Philippine capitol of Manila. Mercy's three-day port-call included several meetings with host nation officials and the ship's staff and crew. Tours of the ship's medical facilities were also made available to press and family members of the crew, who are living in the Manila area. Mercy is conducting a five-month humanitarian deployment to South and Southeast Asia, and the Pacific Islands. The medical crew aboard Mercy will provide general and ophthalmology surgery, basic medical evaluation and treatment, preventive medicine treatment, dental screenings and treatment, optometry screenings, eyewear distribution, public health training and veterinary services as requested by the host nations. Like all U.S. Naval forces Mercy is able to rapidly respond to a range of situations on short notice. Mercy is uniquely capable of supporting medical and humanitarian assistance needs and is configured with special medical equipment and a robust multi-specialized medical team who can provide a range of services ashore as well as aboard the ship. The medical staff is augmented with an assistance crew, many of whom are part of non-governmental organizations that have significant medical capabilities. One of the boats in the "Dunkirk Little Ships" section of the Diamond Jubilee flotilla. The description from the official boat listings says: MTB's (Motor Torpedo Boats) were developed to be able to mount a quick response to threats from any sea-going vessel, either warship or submarine. MTB 102 was completed and launched in May 1937 and ran trials on The Solent. She saw active service mainly in the English Channel. During 'Operation Dynamo', the evacuation of the British Expeditionary Force, she crossed the Channel no less than seven times. In 1944 she carried Winston Churchill and General Eisenhower to review the ships assembled on the South Coast for the D-Day landings and so saw both the end of the desperate evacuation of the British Forces from Europe and the start of their determined return.

A replica of Sir Francis Drake's ship - the Golden Hind - lying permanently in Brixham Harbour.
The original ship, with a crew of 80 sailors and 10 officers, circumnavigated the globe between 1577 and 1580.
Five ships set out - Pelican, Elizabeth, Swan, Marigold and Benedict. During the voyage the Pelican was renamed the Golden Hind in honour of his friend Christopher Hatton whose crest featured a hind (a deer).
Sir Francis brought home looted gold, silver, jewels and cash worth 25 million pounds in today's (2003) money.
Only two of the ships returned, the Golden Hind and the Elizabeth. Taken by Adrian Pingstone in July 2003 and released to the public domain.

Shipwreck is the story of Jahur and Lamu, men that work at the ship yards breaking vessels in Chittagong, a coastal province of Bangladesh# This is the story of ordinary Bengali men struggling to raise their families against a backdrop of labor uncertainty, health hazards unknown to us, and salaries that make them the most competitive labor force in the world# Jahur is a cutter, a crafted worker that slices down the ships day and night# He sits at the top of the job positions in the yard# Lamu is older but strong, he is one of those workers that lift and carry steel planks all day# The three of them represent the whole of the man power assembled in the yards# This is their story#

Atlantic Ocean (Dec. 1, 2006) - A U.S. Coast Guard HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter gets a closer look at the fishing vessel “Miss Melissa,” as a boat crew deployed from the U.S. Navy’s amphibious transport dock ship USS San Antonio (LPD 17) makes their way to the distressed vessel in heavy seas and 40 knot winds. The ship’s Commanding Officer, Cmdr. Brad Lee, answered Miss Melissa’s distress call immediately deploying a crew of five personnel in a ridged hull inflatable boat (RHIB) to retrieve the crew, later sending a team back to the fishing vessel to assist with dewatering efforts. The Coast Guard later towed the boat back to port. The rescued crew was brought aboard San Antonio and provided, dry clothing, food, and an opportunity to make phone calls home. Photographs of the officially called 'refitting' were taken, according Aichelburg, on 1861-11-08 and 1862-04-20, respectively, in San Rocco. From "Novara 1850", just two ribs were kept. Mind, for instance, that there are 3 more gunports, later. Note that the machine newbuilt ship would only be installed after launch.

Christmas message from the workers (23923467065).jpg

Christmas message from the workers of John Readhead & Sons Ltd, South Shields as they prepare to launch the cargo ship ‘Empire Curzon’, 24 December 1943 (TWAM ref. 1061/1053).

This set celebrates the achievements of the shipyard of John Readhead & Sons. The firm has played a significant role in the North East’s illustrious shipbuilding history and the development of South Shields.
The company began in 1865 when John Readhead, a shipyard manager, entered into business with J Softley at a small yard on the Lawe at South Shields. Following the dissolution of the partnership in 1872, it continued as John Readhead & Co on the same site until 1880 when the High West Yard was purchased. After Readhead’s four sons were taken into the business in 1888 the company traded as John Readhead & Sons becoming a limited company in 1908. In 1968 the company was absorbed by the Swan Hunter Group and in 1977 became part of the nationalised British Shipbuilders. In the same year the last vessel was launched and the site was sold off in 1984.
Readheads was prolific and built over 600 ships from 1865 to 1968, including 87 vessels for the Hain Steamship Company Ltd and over forty for the Strick Line Ltd. The shipyard also built four ships for the Prince Line, founded by Sir James Knott. The firm built vessels, which were involved in the major conflicts of the Twentieth Century. During the First World War they built patrol vessels and ‘x’ lighters (motor landing craft used in the Gallipoli campaign) for the Admiralty. During the Second World War the firm built tankers for the Normandy Landings.

Whilst conducting Cold Weather Amphibious Warfare Training within the beautiful Fjords of Northern Norway, 150 miles north of the Arctic Circle, HMS Ocean's embarked photographer was able to capture this stunning image of the Northern Lights shimmering above the Helicopter Carrier's Flight Deck.

HMS Ocean is the Royal Navy's largest warship and was operating in the region in December 2009 as part of the UK's Amphibious Task Group, conducting Exercise Cold Response; a multinational exercise conducted alongside the Norwegian Armed Forces.

Albion Class landing platform dock HMS Bulwark during Exercise Joint Warrior. The ship is in transit with RFA Mounts Bay, HMS Illustrious and USNS Leeroy Gruman.

For the third time in four months the men and women have restored peace and order to a troubled region – in this instance the troubled shores of the Wallian Archipelago (which bears an uncanny resemblance to the Western Isles of Scotland).

The biggest military exercise in Europe in 2012 has drawn to a close – and Portsmouth-based carrier HMS Illustrious has once again been at the heart of it.

Having restored political relationships between the countries of Ginger and Brownia (aka North Devon) in December last year and having brought security to the Nerthus region of Borgland and Gardarland (aka Norway) in March, it once again fell to the helicopter assault ship to ensure that stability was brought to the countries of the Wallian Archipelago – protagonists in the latest Joint Warrior exercise.

Some 8,000 personnel from half a dozen nations – including the USA, Germany, Netherlands and Norway – have taken part in the two-week-long war games which are designed to develop the ability of aircraft, warships and submarines to operate as part of a multi-national task group in a complex and demanding operational environment.

The Niagara, Valorous, Gordon and Agamemnon laying the cable at mid-ocean RMG PU6212.tiff
The Niagara, Valorous, Gorgon (misspelt Gordon) & Agamemnon laying the cable at mid-ocean

This hand-coloured lithograph is one of eight published in the 1861 edition of the Manual of the Corporation of the City of New York (New York: D.T. Valentine, 1861). It shows the USS Niagara (a steam frigate), HMS Agamemnon (a Second Rate ship of the line), HMS Valorous, and HMS Gorgon (both steam-powered paddle frigates; the Gorgon is misidentified as Gordon on the print) at a point in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, where they are laying the telegraph cable. Smokestacks can be seen on the decks of the Niagara and Agamemnon, and the paying-out machinery used to drop the cable into the ocean is clearly visible at the stern of the Niagara. Several human figures are also visible on the top deck of the Niagara. The prevalence of the American ship Niagara and the amount of detail used to illustrate her as opposed to the other three ships may be due to the fact that the publishers were also American.

In 1858, the Atlantic Telegraph Company employed these four ships to lay the submarine telegraph cable from Great Britain to Newfoundland. The two primary ships in use were the USS Niagara and HMS Agamemnon (launched in 1855 and 1845, respectively). The HMS Valorous and HMS Gorgon were used as escort vessels. Because there was no ship at the time that could bear the entire weight of the telegraph cable, it was divided between the Niagara and Agamemnon. The ends of the cable were spliced together when the ships reached the rendevous point in the mid-Atlantic Ocean. From that point, the Agamemnon sailed to Ireland and the Niagara to Newfoundland, each laying the cable along the way. Both ships landed the cable on August 5, but due to the cable's flawed design, it worked only for three weeks before failing.

Pictured is the Algerian Navy Rescue Tug, the El Mousif in the English Channel.

The image was taken from Royal Navy Wildcat HMA2 Helicopter of 815 Naval Air Squadron.

The El Mousif bearing the pennant number 702, is the second of three identical vessels to be ordered from the manufactures in Norway. The 86m vessels were based on the Rolls-Royce UT515 design and have a pull strength of 200 tonnes and capable of tasks such as towing, salvage work, coastguard patrolling, oil recovery and emergency stand-by. It can reach speeds of 20 knots and is suited for patrol and fishery protection duties.

These Algerian Navy tugs intensive trials and training have been conducted under the auspices of British Navy Flag Officer Sea Training in the Clyde and on the south coast of England. A third vessel is due to be delivered in September.
